2024 Year in Review - Top 6 highlights

Happy New Year! 2024 was another fantastic year for investors. Even though I barely moved any money around, I had my 2nd highest return ever. 2024 was also a year where I felt comfortable enough to move decent chunks of money into non-traditional investments. In this post, I will review some of my year's highlights. Are you ready? Standby.

  1. SP 500 up +23%

    1. With interest rates being cut and potentially more to come, the markets got excited. However, now that the federal election is decided, there is a change in tune from the Fed. It is still unknown if rates will continue to be cut.

  2. META stock up +70%

    1. For those who have been following my blog from the beginning, you may remember that META and MSFT make up a large portion of my portfolio. Larger than it should be. But I’ve gotten lucky this year and was able to reap the benefits of 70% gains on a massive holding.

  3. Increased crypto position from $60k to $180k

    1. After the election in November, I immediately bought another $100k in Bitcoin. I still do not understand or believe that Bitcoin will replace fiat currency, but with the new administration being very pro-crypto, it was too easy of a call to make. I have since made around +25%.

  4. Made my first investment in a private company (Seed Round)

    1. I was approached by a former coworker to invest in a fund to seed one of the companies in his portfolio. I can’t disclose much, but I am very excited to be a seed round investor in a company whose values align with mine and whose business plan is simple, yet profitable and scalable.

  5. Increased net worth by $1,484,440

    1. Despite having my largest net worth increase in 2023 (+$1,671,000), I was able to follow it up with another monster year in 2024. The last 2 years have been nothing but successful returns. But as I learned in 2021-2022, it can evaporate quickly. This is why I still have about $500,000 held in short-term bonds.

  6. Ahead of Net Worth projections by $2,124,216

    1. And for those who strictly follow FIRE schedules, you may be wondering how am I tracking against my FIRE projections. I’ve far exceeded the original goal of $4,000,000, so I don’t measure my net worth against that number anymore. However, I continue to update my FIRE spreadsheet which projects what my net worth should be. As of 2024, I ended the year being ahead of that net worth projection by $2,124,216. After almost a decade of tracking my net worth, it is very humbling to see that number. I am considering splurging on a new truck, should I do it?

Conclusion

I’m still waiting for one of my companies that I hold significant stock in to go IPO. That should net me anywhere between $1-10M based on publicly published 2022 numbers. With that said, I wish you all a Happy New Year and for everyone to make great strides in achieving your financial goals.
